About

Aileen Nielsen is an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts School of Law, where she teaches courses on contracts, privacy, and AI. Her research focuses on the interplay of law and technology, drawing on empirical methods and private law topics. She has written two trade books on machine learning and has also worked in industry as a data scientist. She is a member of the New York bar.
Before joining UMass Law, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Harvard Law School, an Affiliate of the NYU Information Law Institute, and a Visiting Scholar in Law and Economics at Stanford Law School. She is a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard and a Fellow at the Center for Law & Economics, ETH Zurich. She has presented around the world on topics in AI and privacy; recent talks include Artificial Intelligence & the Future of Privacy at the Berkman Klein Center and Exploring the Limits and Possibilities of Legal LLM Evaluation at the University of Hong Kong.
Alongside her legal work, she has been active in the data science community as an author, speaker, and practitioner. She is the author of Practical Time Series Analysis (O’Reilly, 2019) and Practical Fairness (O’Reilly, 2020), and has taught widely used tutorials on time series analysis in Python, including at SciPy 2016 and PyCon 2017.
